Frequently Asked Questions

Where do your cows come from?

All of our cows are born right here on our farm in Clinton County, Iowa.  Our herd of handpicked breeding animals are carefully selected to deliver the best quality, best tasting beef!  Calves are raised with their mom on pasture.  After weaning, calves are moved into a feeding facility on our farm.

What makes 633 Beef better?

633 Beef tastes better because of our herd's genetics, feed program, and cattle handling techniques. Our herd's genetics include black angus for their tenderness and consistent marbling in their meat.  We utilize calm handling techniques to minimize animal stress and are Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certified. Our facilities are designed to optimize animal comfort. Did you know science has shown stress can cause tough meat? We think the beautiful sunsets they see on the farm are stress relievers too!!

What do your cows eat?

Because 633 Beef cattle are born on our farm, feed is optimized for end quality of the meat and the health of the animal for its entire life. We work closely with a nutritionist to ensure the cattle are receiving exactly what they need. Our cattle are grass fed and corn finished. Adding corn to their diet during the finishing period increases marbling which improves taste, tenderness, and the grade of the beef. As a bonus, cattle love corn. Who says happy cows are in California?!

How much meat will I get?

The amount of beef you will get from your animal ranges from the following:

  • Whole: ~500-550 lbs of packaged beef.

  • Half: ~250-270 lbs of packaged beef.

  • Quarter: ~125-135 lbs of packaged beef.

Refer to our "How it Works" page for more information.

How much does it cost?

At the time of delivery to the locker, you will take ownership of your portion of the animal.  Cost is calculated on a per pound basis.  Our current price is $2.66/lb hanging weight.  This is a big savings from supermarket prices!  Once the butcher has measured the hanging weight, you will be charged, from 633 Beef, the current per pound price times your portion of the animal. Processing costs are additional and are paid directly to the locker.  They range from about $0.65- $0.70 per pound of hanging weight.  Refer to our "How it Works" Page for more information.

How much freezer space do I need?

The rule of thumb is one cubic foot of freezer space for every 35 – 40 pounds of packaged meat. A quarter of beef will fit into a 5 -7 cubic foot chest freezer. A half beef needs about 8 cubic feet. You should plan for at least 16-17 cu.ft. freezer space for a whole beef.
